Clothes made from synthetic materials? No thanks! That is what many women think. Nowadays, artificial fibres - such as polyester - still have a negative reputation as it reminds us of the shiny, sweaty and cheap fabric we know from the 80s and 90s. However, there's absolutely no fabric that has evolved more than polyester over the years. The biggest advantage of this man-made fibre? Just as with natural materials, there are also differences in quality within the synthetic spectrum. This has nothing to do with the material itself, but rather with its processing and implementation. However, polyester has some unique properties that ensure a longer lifecycle of your garment. Polyester is known for its high tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Clothes crafted from polyester are less sensitive for wrinkling and hardly lose any color. Because of its color fastness, the newest print techniques can be applied to polyester garments - creating an intense color - perfectly resistant to external influences (think sunlight, washing and ironing). Polyester is often used in combination with natural materials such as cotton and linen for optimum retention of the fit and color.

Because of its properties, polyester is the most common used fabric in sportswear. In particular in combination with elastane to add extra stretch, polyester ensures an extremely comfortable and skin hugging fit. Forget about the sweaty image of polyester, because the fact is that this fabric doesn't absorb moisture which is one of the biggest advantages! Polyester excludes moisture and evaporates without leaving any spots. The result? You and your garments stay fresh for a longer period of time. Plus, because of its strong fibres and wrinkle-resistance, your garment remains in shape throughout the day.

Polyester is the most versatile of man-made fibres and therefore has many possibilities for use. It appears in all kinds of variations in both knits and weaves. Depending on fibre fineness, fabric construction and finishing the appearance can vary from matt to shiny, soft, woolly, fine, coarse, supple and stiff. This tells us that the appearance of the fabric is not determined by the raw material but more by the way the raw material is processed. Polyester is - unlike linen for example - a multi-purpose fabric that can be developed exactly according to our wishes, making the most unique designs even more beautiful.

The fact that polyester is made from strong fibers, makes it a material that lasts long and is color and shape-retaining. Unlike other synthetic materials, polyester has a better heat resistance. So if necessary, it can be washed at a maximum temperature of 40 degrees. Polyester dries quickly and often, ironing isn't even necessary due to the low-maintenance character.

Although the production process of polyester isn't more environmentally friendly than for example cotton, linen or wool, the use of it is way more sustainable! Polyester can be washed at low temperatures, ironing is often not necessary and the garments have a longer lifecycle. Polyester is one of the few materials that is fully recyclable and more and more brands - such as Norma Kamali - choose to implement the fabric into their collections. Polyester can even be recycled several times without losing its quality - a true eye-opener for the fashion industry, that adds to the popularity of polyester and makes it the fabric of the future.
