About
The name “Supima” is an abbreviation for Superior Pima and indicates that the clothing is made of 100% American Pima Cotton. This makes Supima the brand name of American luxuries cotton. Pima cotton is a generic name for cotton with extra long staple length (ELS). This type of cotton is grown mainly in the United States, Australia and Peru. In these places, the cotton benefits from a long growing season in a warm and dry climate. The main differences between Pima cotton and regular cotton are the extra long staple length, the strength of the fiber and the fineness of the fibre. Pima cotton can be spun in fine yarns, which can be processed in softer, finer and luxurious fabrics.
Characteristics
The staple length of
Pima coton is 35% longer. This increases the softsess and luster of the fabric. Fewer fiber ends are exposed, resulting in less pilling under influence of friction. Products made of Pima cotton will last longer, because the fibres are stronger than regular cotton fibres. Also, the colour of the clothing will last longer, because Pima cotton absorbs and retains colour better.
Good to know
An experimental farm in Arizona developed a particularly strong en soft type of extra-long staple cotton. This type of cotton was named
Pima, in honor of the Pima Indians who developed this cotton in America.
