About
Polyester is a syntactic man-made fabric that was introduced in the early 1950's, and is currently the 2nd most used material after cotton worldwide. Today's polyester is not as we knew is 30 years ago as it is the most versatile man-made fiber. It is used for everything from costumes, dresses, rainwear, work wear, filling material, hotel bedding, tents, sail cloths etc. PET polyester is made from recycled plastic drinking bottles and is seen as an environmentally friendly material due to the recycling process. However, it must be blended with virgin polyester (new fiber) for added strength.
Characteristics
Polyester is a strong fiber with an excellent abrasion resistance, is wrinkle-resistant, absorbs oil easily but is non-absorbent to moisture and dries fast. It is manipulated for many functions, is easily washable and does not shrink, it is sun-resistant and is resistant to mildew and insects.
Good to know
Recycled Polyester is often used by sustainable clothing brands, and many high-end brands now use polyester regularly in their collections as it is a long-lasting fiber that can resemble most fibers - which can help them keeping the costs down. Polyester melt in high heat, so make sure you keep good distance from camp-fires.
Blends
Polyester is commonly found in blends where it is used to reduce creasing, softening the handle of the fabric, and adding easy-care properties.
Aftercare
Polyester textiles are very easy to care for. Machine washable on 60°, using an appropriate detergent from The Laundress selection. Do not bleach, warm iron, can be dry cleaned, low heat tumble dry.
