These 3 female style icons still inspire us today

Fashion is and will always remain a world of inspiration. Clothes don’t only have a practical function, keeping us warm and protecting us from different weather conditions, but symbolize a whole lot more. Think of times of yesteryear when differences between hierarchies were made visible through what you wore. For women, the more uncomfortable the suit – think corsets and immensely large hoop skirts – the more well-off the woman, as uncomfortable clothes equaled not having to work.

That all changed at the beginning of the previous century, when the emancipation movement gave women a growing sense of freedom, leading them to use clothes as a way to express themselves – slowly breaking free from all things conventional. The female style icon was born. We’re dedicating this blog to three of our favorite style icons in particular. Read on to discover in what way these three power ladies still contribute to fashion nowadays.

The twentieth century has left us with an impressive line of female style icons. Women who’s legacy and message were so powerful that we still consider them to be an example.

Making a selection of merely three wasn’t easy but as far as we’re concerned, these three women have paved the way for three distinctive dress styles that are still loved to this day.

1. Marlène Dietrich

Berlin actress Marlène Dietrich didn’t just cause a furor on the big screen in the thirties of the last century, but her progressive dress style also broke all conventions back then. In a time where women only wore dresses and skirts, Marlène chose a different path by being the first woman to wear men’s suits and hats. And boy, did she! But she didn’t steer clear from classic ladylike outfits either, looking great in feminine dresses and berets. Looking back, we could say she was the first woman showcasing a gender fluid style, which inspired many other style icons along the way, such as Bianca Jagger, Grace Jones and Tilda Swinton.

2. Stevie Nicks

Like a true flower child, Stevie Nicks’ go-to look included long maxi dresses that elegantly sway back and forth. The front woman of music formation Fleetwood Mac didn’t just enchant her audience with her mesmerizing voice but also with her free-spirited bohemian outfits, which often earned her the reputation of looking witchy. Bohemian looks weren’t an exception in the decade of flower power but Stevie knew just how to add a personal touch by layering decadent amounts of chiffon, lace and large fringe scarfs on top of each other. What a presence she must have been on those stages! So, it's not a very big surprise that modern style icons like Sienna Miller and Florence Welch are still inspired by her today. Actually, Stevie is responsible for another distinct fashion style, when she started to combine her hippie attire with an all-black period, inspiring many goths among us.

"I'm timeless.

I'll never be in style, but I'll always be different."

3. Debbie Harry

And last, but certainly not least: the undisputed queen of post-punk Debbie Harry. In this case, the true question is: what didn’t she wear? From a pillow case with red tape to the most memorable cult outfits. During her time as lead singer of the band Blondie, Debbie has given us a wide and colorful range of different looks, but even after that she kept surprising us with her out-of-the box combinations. With her sexy, provocative and cheeky style – and ditto personality – she represents an entire fashion movement that arose from the depths of the arty New York club and art scene in the seventies. Debbie is an absolute example for many women after her, including Madonna and Courtney Love. When you think Debbie, you think rock print T-shirts, leather jackets, bare legs, and not to forget: that iconic bleachy blond hair.
