Perfectly maintain your leather with these 5 must-know tips

Leather is timeless and can be teamed with almost everything. We women like to see leather jackets, pants, bags or skirts as lifetime investments. And they are, because leather gets better and more beautiful with age, when taken care of properly. We’ll provide you with the must-know tips and tricks to keep your leather items in perfect condition, so they’ll last a lifetime.

1. Remove stains immediately
You can compare the care for leather with caring for your skin; both are delicate and damage is often difficult to repair. Stains must be removed immediately. If not, the leather will fully absorb the stain and will become stiff and crackled. First, try to remove the stain by gently rubbing the leather together. If this doesn’t work, then follow these steps:

• Make soapy water with 7 parts water and 1 part baby shampoo
• Use a damp sponge and gently rub the stain
• Always dry the leather immediately with a clean, dry cloth
• Never use the heat of a hair dryer to speed up the drying process

Grease stains are best removed by sprinkling a bit of talcum powder on the stain and brushing it off gently after a few hours

2. Avoid direct sunlight
We can’t live without, but leather doesn’t like direct sunlight. Make sure you don’t leave your leather garment in the sun for a long period of time or near a window when storing. This way you prevent your leather from drying out or bursting.

3. Store leather items properly
Leather stays at its best when it can ‘breathe’, which prevents fibers from getting stifled and helps maintain its natural shine. Leather needs its space:
• Don’t hang your garment in an overfull wardrobe
• Never fold the garment
This also goes for leather bags:
• Use the original paper filling when storing your bag to maintain its shape.
• Does your bag come with a dust bag? Use it when storing!
4. Pay attention to the air humidity
We all know that rain is no friend of leather, but leather is also very susceptible to the humidity of the environment:
• Never store your leather item in a room that’s too humid or dry.
• Those silly silica gel bags that you get with a new bag - and that often end up in the garbage can - offer the perfect solution. They absorb just the right amount of moisture. Simply place them in the pockets of your leather garment when storing.

5. Prevent and remove unpleasant odors
The grain of leather can absorb strong odors over time.
• Always make sure that you dry wet leather immediately with a clean cloth to prevent mold and unpleasant odors.
For the removal of musty smells, newspapers do the trick. Newsprint paper perfectly absorbs this annoying 'stale' smell because of its porosity:
• Make sure the item is completely dry
• Place a few sheets of crumpled newspaper and your leather garment in a sealed box for at least two days.

When these tips don’t do the trick, then you can always pay a visit to a leather cleaning specialist.
